The first account of the ‘industrial’ manufacture of medieval floor tiles at Tyler’s Green, Penn in Buckinghamshire, the most prolific of all the medieval tile manufactories; with details of the kilns that have only just been unearthed. Les décors céramiques, important domaine du répertoire gothique, se sont bien entendu inspirés des styles déjà existants comme ceux des manuscrits.

Early in the 16th century some majolica potters, coming from Venice, settled down in Antwerp and established potteries that produced luxury dishes, floor and wall tiles, albarellos, etc. for more than one century. Due to the invasion of China porcelain, the Antwerp majolica potters converted into faience productions and left for Holland (Delft) where they founded new production centres.

Museum re-opening On June 8, 2003 the Abbey Museum Ten Duinen 1138 will re-open at Koksijde after having undergone a thorough renovation. The museum focuses on the history of the monastic order of Cîteaux with special attention on the bricks and tile production of the Cistercians in the Low Countries. Museum re-opening Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam, re-opens on May 10. The tile collection will be spread out over the different museum rooms which will be set up thematically. Several tile pictures and Turkish tiles are on show in the corridor leading to the auditorium.
