The study day is for all those interested in the future of British mural art from the post-1945 era, when murals in a vast range of materials - tiles, mosaic, concrete, fibreglass and many more - were produced for a wide variety of locations. This was a true revival in the art of mural making. Many of these attractive but often little-known and vulnerable artworks are now threatened, and are rarely helped by the listed buildings legislation. Our comprehensive panel of speakers will show us wonderful examples of postwar mural art and discuss how best these works may be conserved. The study day will run from around 9.45am-4.30pm, and the £47 cost will include a buffet lunch. The Gallery is opposite Farringdon Station.

Book DOUG, Rose - Tiles of the unexpected underground, 216pp + box containing 4 fold-out design plans (1200 x 960mm) covering all the 1906-7 London Underground tube stations, slip cased.
This is the definitive book on tiling in the London Underground and represents the fruit of over 25 years of study by the author. The idea of making a book about the tiles on London’s Underground was first mooted back in 1982 when an exploratory article appeared in Glazed Expressions issue 3. One of the problems of publishing the book was the difficulty of presenting a full platform length of tiling in a single width - the book would have needed to be five feet long! This has been overcome by placing the plans on separate sheets and keeping the text in a more conventional book format.
The book deals with all the stations that were built during the expansion of the Underground network started during 1906-7, each station having its own identity created by a unique scheme of tilework. This was needed in order that the many illiterate people who used it could recognise the station without having to read the name. There were 94 platforms at 43 stations and three main contractors were involved: W B Simpson & Co (agents for Maws tiles), George Wooliscroft and Son, and the Permanent Decorative Glass Company, about whom very little is known.

Depuis le Moyen Âge, le Beauvaisis est une terre de potiers réputée pour son activité céramique. La manufacture Gréber de Beauvais occupe une place toute particulière au sein de cette tradition séculaire. Elle fut fondée en 1868 par Johan Gréber, d'origine autrichienne, puis reprise par ses fils Charles et Paul en 1880, et enfin par un neveu en 1933. Elle resta active jusqu'en 1974 arrivant à concilier modernité et tradition. Les pièces présentées proviennent de collections particulières ainsi que des collections du musée départemental de l’Oise. Abondante iconographie et textes d’une grande clarté permettent de découvrir la production des différents acteurs de la dynastie des Gréber entre 1868 et 1974. Sont traitées sur un même plan la production utilitaire et les pièces artistiques les plus prestigieuses.

Book - Mit Bilderfliesen durch die Bibel. Pünktlich zum Ostfriesischen Kirchentag in Norden (4.-6. Juli 2008) soll "Die Fliesenbibel" erscheinen. Das Buch dokumentiert die gleichnamige Ausstellung zum 30. Deutschen Kirchentag 2005 in Hannover. Es zeigt in zahlreichen Farbbildern den beeindruckenden Reichtum an biblischen Motiven auf niederländischen Fliesen, der bei Sammlern in Ostfriesland noch vorhanden ist. Das Buch informiert in einem ersten Teil über die Geschichte und Herkunft der Bibelfliesen. Der zweite Teil zeigt alle Bibelfliesen, die auf dem 30. Kirchentag 2005 in Hannover ausgestellt wurden und der dritte Teil berichtet über die Erfahrungen, Ideen und Projekte, die durch die Ausstellung angeregt wurden. Außerdem enthält er zusätzliche Abbildungen von Bibelfliesen, die nicht Bestandteil der Ausstellung waren.
Schon auf dem 31. Kirchentag in Köln wird am Freitag, den 8. Juni 2008 von 14:15 Uhr bis 15:45 im Kölner Messe-Kongreßzentrum die Veranstaltung "Mit Bibelfliesen zur Fliesenbibel" stattfinden.

Exhibition - "Carl Sigmund Luber, ontwerper van Jugendstilkeramiek voor Johann von Schwarz, 1896-1906", in: Nederlands Tegelmuseum, Eikenzoom 12, 6731 BH Otterlo. Tel. +31-318-591.519, Fax -592.000, 15 september - 2 december 2007. Karakteristiek voor de ontwerpen van Luber zijn de combinatie van moderne industriële technieken en ambachtelijk handwerk. De tegels werden volgens moderne methoden geperst, waarbij de lijnen van de tekening een reliëf vormen dat de kleurvlakken begrenst. De kleuren kunnen hierdoor snel en eenvoudig ingevuld worden. Toch blijkt steeds dat delen van de voorstelling, zoals de gezichten van de vrouwen, heel zorgvuldig met de hand werden uitgewerkt. Opvallend is ook de diepe glans van de glazuren, helemaal vrij van craquelé. De gebruikte grondstof, uit de eigen speksteenmijnen van de fabriek, was van een zeer zuivere kwaliteit en de gebruikte glazuren waren hierop zeer goed afgestemd. Opvallend zijn vaak ook de monturen waarin veel tegels gezet zijn.

Tile walks in Lisbon - the "Walks on the Art Side" company in Lisbon does daily guided tours of Lisbon's most extraordinary examples of a unique heritage: the azulejos turned into mosaics of grandeur. They visit convents, palaces, churches, public buildings and, comment on the azulejos art and history, styles, techniques and major influences from the 16th to 20th century. The walks take place in central Lisbon and in the Belém district (in partnership with one of Europe's oldest tile factories) lasting approx. 3 hours.

Exhibition - "Animals en Taulells", 18.10.2007 - 10.01.2008, in: Museo del Azulejo Manolo Safont, Onda. Exposición conjunta entre el Museu del Taulell "Manolo Safont" y el Museo de Ciencias Naturales El Carmen de Onda.
Taulells d'animals, inaugurada en el Museu del Taulell "Manolo Safont", presenta 427 azulejos con los animales como motivo. La mayoría proceden del propio fondo del Museo y se completa con los que rotulan los nombres de los animales del Museo de Ciencias Naturales "El Carmen", pintados estos últimos por Rosendo Esteller.
La exposición permite observar el cambio y la evolución de los modelos decorativos, y el diseño de los azulejos durante quinientos años, de los siglos XV al XX. Casi todos los azulejos son valencianos y fueron fabricados en Onda, mayoritariamente, en Valencia, Manises y Castelló. Sólo tres piezas proceden de antiguas fábricas extranjeras. Los azulejos del siglo XX son, principalmente, de los prestigiosos ceramistas ondenses Alós, Abad y Manolo Safont.

The former Cistercian Abbey of Our Lady of the Dunes is one of the important medieval brick architecture sites in Europe. The Cistercians were one of the initiators in northern Europe to use brick as a replacement building material for stone. At the Dunes Abbey this led to a current brick collection of more than 600 different types. This colloquium looks at medieval brick architecture and forms in a broader perspective. It is organised at the end of the current restoration campaign of a major part of the ruins and want to encourage both reflection and research into medieval brick architecture and techniques in the North Sea Area.

In het midden van de 19de eeuw kende de toepassing van keramiek in de architectuur een hoogtepunt in Noord-Frankrijk en België. Door het gebrek aan respect voor deze kunstvorm zijn hiervan op dit ogenblik nog maar weinig resten overgebleven. Odile Lesaffre toont in haar bijdrage aan hoe gedurende meer dan een halve eeuw keramiek kleur en variatie bracht in de architecturale stijlen als eclecticisme, Art nouveau en Art deco.
Au milieu du XIXe siècle, l'utilisation de la céramique en architecture connut son apogée en Belgique et dans le nord de la France. Suite au peu de respect témoigné pour cette forme artistique, nous n'en avons conservé que quelques rares exemplaires. Dans sa contribution, Odile Lesaffre montre comment la céramique apporta, pendant plus d'un demi-siècle, couleur et variation dans l'architecture et marqua des styles aussi divers que l'éclectisme, l'Art nouveau et l'Art déco.

Auction "The Creffield Collection of Decorative British Tiles", Bonhams, 101 New Bondstreet, London, W1S 1SR, on Wednesday 14 March and Wednesday 26 September 2007.
Peter Creffield purchased his first tile in 1965 and by 2007 had amassed over 800 examples. Bonhams will now auction the entire collection in a two part sale. Key manufacturers in the collection include Minton Hollins & Co, W.T Copeland & Sons, Maw & Co, Craven Dunhill & Co, Josiah Wedwood & Sons, Pilkingtons and T & R Boote. Because of the quantity of tiles involved, Bonhams have split the collection into two parts.

The study day is for all those interested in the future of British mural art from the post-1945 era, when murals in a vast range of materials - tiles, mosaic, concrete, fibreglass and many more - were produced for a wide variety of locations. This was a true revival in the art of mural making. Many of these attractive but often little-known and vulnerable artworks are now threatened, and are rarely helped by the listed buildings legislation. Our comprehensive panel of speakers will show us wonderful examples of postwar mural art and discuss how best these works may be conserved. The study day will run from around 9.45am-4.30pm, and the £47 cost will include a buffet lunch. The Gallery is opposite Farringdon Station.

Exhibition "Schönheit aus dem Feuer. Seltene Tonfliesen aus dem hohen Mittelalter, farbenprächtige Majolikafliesen der italienischen Renaissance sowie Fayencenfliesen mit groteskem Dekor aus dem Schloß Écouen bei Paris, ferner barocke Fliesen aus Spanien und aus den Niederlanden bis hin zu Beispielen aus dem 19. Jahrhundert belegen die außerordentliche Wertschätzung der Fliese im Bereich der vornehmen Raumkunst. Mehr als 300 kostbare Exponate geben einen Einblick in die Geschichte der europäischen Fliesenkunst vom 12. Jahrhundert bis zu den Anfängen des Jugendstils.
Die Ausstellung präsentiert die erst seit kurzem aufgearbeitete, zwischenzeitlich bereits legendär gewordene Privatsammlung des renommierten Schweizer Archäologen und Kunstwissenschaftlers Dr. Robert Forrer (1866-1947), wie sie vom Museum für Kunst und Kulturgeschichte Dortmund im Wettstreit mit größten internationalen Museen angekauft werden konnte. Im Museum Huelsmann ist sie insgesamt auf drei Ebenen des Hauses zu sehen.
Besonders beeindrucken den heutigen Betrachter die frühen Beispiele, die aus Kirchen, Klöstern und Burgen stammen, so auch aus der Abteikirche von Cluny, dem Zisterzienserinnenkloster Marienhausen, aus Siena und Florenz und aus dem maurischen Spanien. Vielfältig und skurril sind die verwendeten Motive, unter den Darstellungen finden sich Ritter, Mönche, Fabelwesen, heraldische Tiere und rätselhafte Zeichen. Ornamente fügen sich über mehrere Fliesen hinweg zu großen Rapport- und Kreismustern zusammen. Bemerkenswert erscheinen auch die differenzierten Herstellungstechniken, die sich aus nächster Nähe am Objekt studieren lassen. http://www.museumhuelsmann.de

Article JOLIET, Wilhelm - 'Ahnengalerie der besonderen Art', in: Fliesen und Platten, 6/2007, p. 32-33. Der 102 Meter lange und 10,5 Meter hohe Wandfries an der Fassade des zum Stallhof gehörenden "Lange Ganges" an der Augustusstrasse in Dresden zählt rund 25.000 Fliesen im Format 205 x 205 Millimeter. Dieser 957 Quadratmeter große Wandfries zeigt eine Ahnengalerie der zwischen 1123 und 1904 in Sachsen herrschenden Fürstenhauses Wettin. Es ist damit der größten keramischen Wandbild der Welt. Den Beginn des Fürstenzuges bilden Herolde, Spielleute und Bannerträger vor Konrad dem Größten, Markgraf von Meißen. Neben den 35 mit ihren Beinamen bezeichnete Markgrafen, Herzöge, Kurfürsten und Könige hoch zu Ross sind noch 58 weitere Personen verewigt. Das Wandbild ist durch der Königlichen Porzellanmanufaktur Meißen in 1907 fabriziert.

Article KAMERMANS, Johan - 'Schouw met tegeltableau Jozef wordt verkocht', in: Bulletin van de Vereniging Rembrandt 17-1 (2007) p. 18-20. Het gaat om een vijfhoekige schouw met verschillende tegeltableaus, vervaardigd in Rotterdam, niet lang na 1775. De centrale voorstelling toont het Bijbelse verhaal van Jozef die door zijn broers verkocht wordt. Het geheel telt 180 tegels, in paars beschilderd. Omvang en kwaliteit van de schildering maken deze schouw tot een onvergelijkbaar geheel. Goed gedocumenteerd artikel met literatuurlijst en goede foto's.

Study tour - In celebration of its 40th anniversary the Society of Friends of the Dutch Tile Museum in Otterlo organises a tile study tour to Lisbon and surroundings from 6 till 13 April, 2008. In addition to the well-known Museu Nacional do Azulejo, the participants will visit a large number of museums, churches, palaces, convents and other sites with typically Portuguese tile applications in the Lisbon area, Sintra and south of Lisbon. Dutch tiles in Portuguese buildings are also on the programme, which includes visits to tile factories, antiquarians and local art markets. Participation is restricted to members of the association. Exhibition "Carl Sigmund Luber, ontwerper van Jugendstilkeramiek voor Johann von Schwarz, 1896-1906", in: Nederlands Tegelmuseum, Eikenzoom 12, 6731 BH Otterlo. Tel. +31-318-591.519, Fax -592.000, 15 september - 2 december 2007. Karakteristiek voor de ontwerpen van Luber zijn de combinatie van moderne industriële technieken en ambachtelijk handwerk. De tegels werden volgens moderne methoden geperst, waarbij de lijnen van de tekening een reliëf vormen dat de kleurvlakken begrenst. De kleuren kunnen hierdoor snel en eenvoudig ingevuld worden. Toch blijkt steeds dat delen van de voorstelling, zoals de gezichten van de vrouwen, heel zorgvuldig met de hand werden uitgewerkt. Opvallend is ook de diepe glans van de glazuren, helemaal vrij van craquelé. De gebruikte grondstof, uit de eigen speksteenmijnen van de fabriek, was van een zeer zuivere kwaliteit en de gebruikte glazuren waren hierop zeer goed afgestemd. Opvallend zijn vaak ook de monturen waarin veel tegels gezet zijn.

De Koninklijke Plateelbakkerij Rozenburg (1883-1917) vervaardigde aardewerk en porselein dat internationaal werd bewonderd. De gloriedagen van de Haagse fabriek zijn nauw verbonden met de namen van ontwerper Colenbrander en directeur Kok. De tentoonstelling ‘Rozenburg: plateel uit Haagse kringen’ in het Gemeentemuseum Den Haag beperkt zich echter niet alleen tot hun creatieve jaren. Op de expositie en in de bijbehorende publicatie wordt een zo volledig mogelijk beeld gegeven van de fabriek die zozeer in Haagse kringen verkeerde.

Tile Museum The Can Tinturé Museum of Esplugues de Llobregat, province of Barcelona (already mentioned in Bulletin n°23) opened its doors on 7 May 2003 and is located in the old quarter, in a house built in the late 19th century. Its collection consists mainly of the Salvador Miquel collection, which was acquired in 1999 by the Esplugues Town Council, with a view to preserving it and promoting its study. The collection is made up of more than 10.000 tiles of different styles and patterns, with dates ranging from the 16th century to the 20th century. The museum also organises temporary exhibitions in several town venues and manages the premises of the old Pujol i Bausis factory, more commonly known as “La Rajoleta” (the little tile), which is located just a few metres away from the museum. This factory was an important centre of production of Modern Style ceramics, samples of which can be seen in such outstanding buildings as the Park Güell, the Casa Lleó Morera and the Casa Amatller, of Barcelona, or the Institut Pere Mata of Reus, and many buildings of Antoni Gaudi included in the UNESCO2s World Heritage List. Images with scatological elements became frequent during the times of the Flemish painters Bosch and Breughel the Elder. 2) 'L'arrambador de rajoles d'aresta de la capella de San Bernabé de Zumaia, Guipúscoa' (The Arista Tile Frieze in the Saint Bernabé Chapel of Zumaya, Guipúzcoa) by Javier Carballo Berazadi, Xavier Gabarró Vall, Ismael Manterola Ispizua, p 48-60. In the year 1504 the Elorriaga family bought the privilege to build a chapel in the parish church of the town of Zumaya. That area, dedicated to Saint Bernabé, is decorated with a frieze, made of the so-called "arista" technique tiles. There are three models of tiles.

Exhibition "Het aardewerk van de pottenbakkerij Dupont te Poperinge" (The earthenware of pottery Dupont in Poperinge), 8 - 15 October 2006, in Gasthuiskapel, Gasthuisstraat 3, Poperinge. Opening hours 10h - 12h and 13h30 - 17h. Pottery Dupont was working in Poperinge from 1846 till 1975, but it was the successor of an age-long tradition of potters at the Burgemeester Bertenplein in the centre of the city. Thanks to remains from the workshop, several earthenware shapes, a catalogue dated 1895 and the production books of Louis Verelst-Dupont, it was possible to reconstruct the production of this important earthenware centre.

The company names of Ivora, Goedewaagen, Regina, Zuid-Holland and Zenith are still vivid in the memory of Gouda’s older inhabitants, while the new wave of residents scarcely seem to know of their existence or the heritage of the buildings in their street. Some small earthenware enterprises remain, but the heady days of international success have faded. Traces can still be found in Gouda’s museums, but even here literature in English about the exhibits is sadly lacking.
