Bulletin ECTC

This Bulletin is published with some delay due to the transfer of editorial responsibilities. Frans Caignie, who started the publication of this Bulletin in September 1995, has chosen some time ago to retire from his function after more than 16 years of dedication. Frans was responsible for no less than 33 editions and made the ECTC-Bulletin a very successful platform for exchanging information on all what happens in the wonderful world of tiles. On behalf of all the tile specialists and tile enthusiasts from all over the world, the new editor wants to thank Frans explicitly for his long time dedication.

All lay-out work for this Bulletin will from now on be done by Kelly Witteveen, newly appointed webmaster for the Nederlands Tegelmuseum Otterlo. The new editor also wants to thank her for the valuable assistance.

* Exhibition - "Jugenstilpracht auf Belgischen Fliesen". Ausstellung in Boizenburg vom 7. Oktober 2011 bis 30 September 2012 im Erstes Deutsches Fliesenmuseum, Reichenstrasse 4, D-19258 Boizenburg.
In einer außerordentlichen erlesenen Ausstellung historischer belgischer Fliesen der frühindustriellen Epoche gibt das Erste Deutsche Fliesenmuseum Boizenburg Einblicke in das künstlerische Schaffen unseres Nachbarlandes und schließt damit eine wichtige Lücke in der Vielseitigkeit europäischer Fliesenkultur.
Gezeigt werden Erzeugnisse für Wandbekleidungen und Bodenbeläge im Jugendstil und Art deco bis hin zur Modernen von ehemaligen führenden keramischen Fabriken Belgiens. Sie entwickelten sich zu einem der wichtigsten Produzenten in Europa und waren weltweit mit die größten Konkurrenten deutscher Hersteller.
Prunkvolle Wandbilder und Paneele, sowie Einzelfliesen und technologisches Interieur aus der Zeit der Jahrhundertwende um 1900 beeindrucken in besonderer Weise durch ihre Vielfalt und Ausdrucksstärke sowie technische Meisterschaft und lassen die Handschrift ihrer künstlerischen Entwerfer erkennen.
Anliegen des Ersten Deutschen Fliesenmuseums ist es seinen Besuchern zum ersten Mal eine ausführliche Übersicht der Entwicklung der belgischen Fliese von 1840 bis zum Ende der Fliesenproduktion 1979 zugänglich zu machen und Künstlerpersönlichkeiten dieser Zeit vorzustellen.

*Exhibition - “Bijbels woord in tegelbeeld”, a temporary exhibition of Dutch biblical tiles from ca. 1650 onwards from the collection of Evert van Gelder of Boxtel to be seen in Historisch Museum De Bevelanden in Goes from 17 December 2011 until 15 April 2012. The Van Gelder collection is possibly the largest collection in this field in the Netherlands. Many of the tiles shown were used as illustrations in the recently published “Fliesenbibel.

*Lecture – “Het schitterende erfgoed van Portugal. Vijf eeuwen tegelkunst” held by Francine Stoffels at Arti et Amicitiae, Rokin 112, 1012 LB Amsterdam on 2nd of December 2011. Francine Stoffels , who studied English and Portuguese and has many contacts with Portuguese tile experts, gave a well illustrated overview of the tile history and actual architectural realisations in Portugal. *Conference- "Lisbon: Tiles and the City”, held on 25, 26 and 27 November 2011. The Lisbon City Council (CML), the Institute of History of Art at the University Nova of Lisbon and the Institute of History of Art of the University of Lisbon/Thematic Network on Studies of Tiles and Ceramics João Miguel dos Santos Simões jointly organized this First Meeting on tile heritage in order to discuss issues, share knowledge and experience as an indispensable contribution to a better and more effective awareness of this heritage and to plan preventive action in order to protect and promote tile painting.

*Conferences & Exhibitions – “Azulejería en tierras del Islam”. The Museo Nacional de Cerámica y Artes Suntuarias González Martí, C/ Poeta Querol 2, 46002 Valencia organised in October 2011 a conference day on tiles in Islamic counties e.g. the Maghreb and the Orient with two conferences: “Décors du feu. L’art de la céramique dans l’architecture iranienne à la fin du Moyen Âge” by Sandra Aube (Institut Catholique de París) and “La azulejería tunecina: testimonio del diálogo entre las dos orillas” by Clara-Ilham Álvarez Dopico (Becaria MCU, Museo Nacional «González Martí»).

The same museum featured on 1 December 2011 the group discussion "Restauración virtual del pavimento de “La Fama” del Colegio del arte mayor de la Seda" on the virtual restoration of this important tile floor dating from the middle of the 18th century.

This museum frequently presents, in small temporary exhibitions, important tile panels otherwise kept in the reserves.

*Newsletter – The June 2011 issue of the newsletter edited by the Friends of Terra Cotta Inc. has as its main article: Jay Schockley & Susan Tunick, “A Capital Discovery : Early American Terra-Cotta on a Philadelphia Church” also published in the American Ceramic Circle Journal, Volume XVI. The September 2011 issue contains information on three contemporary projects that use terra cotta for interior purposes. The December 2011 issue focuses on the salvaged terra cotta elements of the former Madison Square Presbyterian Church one of New York’s finest but shortest-lived structures.

The objective of this Bulletin is the exchange of information on all kind of events (publications, exhibitions, lectures, ...) related to the subject of tiles and tiles related architectural ceramics.
Redaction closed twice a year, in February and September.

*24/08 Article GEYSKENS, Leon - Antwerpse inlegtegels in een Europese context, Rapporten van het Stedelijk informatiecentrum archeologie & monumentenzorg, 7, 2011. 100 pagina's, PDF-formaat.
De auteur, Leon Geyskens, heeft gedurende meerdere jaren de Antwerpse vondsten van inlegtegels bestudeerd en deze geconfronteerd met exemplaren die in België, Nederland en Engeland worden aangetroffen. Een inventaris van 419 tegels en tegelfragmenten kon opgedeeld worden in hoofdzakelijk drie grote groepen: spreuktegels, datumtegels en tegels met een renaissance decoratie. Met de logistieke steun van Frans Caignie kon het resultaat van de studie vastgelegd worden in een ruim artikel. Nooit eerder werd deze materie zo grondig en zo ruim bestudeerd en kenbaar gemaakt.

*12/06 Open Museum day - Gilliotmarkt. Ook dit jaar stelt het Gilliot & Roelantsmuseum zijn deuren open voor het grote publiek tijdens de jaarlijkse Gilliotmarkt op zondag 19 juni 2011 van 13.30 tot 18.00 uur. Buiten de vaste collecties ontwerpen, gietvormen, loonboeken en bijzondere tegels, kunnen de bezoekers tijdens de Gilliotmarkt ook luisteren naar voordrachten van keramiekspecialisten of tijdens de veiling hun tegels verkopen of ruilen met andere liefhebbers. Dit alles tegen de achtergrond van de prachtige Sint-Bernardusabdij van Hemiksem. Dagprogramma:
13.30u: Lezing “Een tegelschat van papier: inventarisatie en conservatie van het fonds ontwerptekeningen van Gilliot Hemiksem” door Mario Baeck (Tegelspecialist) in de Roelantszaal van het Gilliot & Roelants Tegelmuseum. Duur: maximum 60 minuten.
14.30u tot 16.00u: Tegelschatting in de inkomhal van het Administratief Centrum (gemeentehuis).
15.00u en 16.30u: Kleine wandeling (ongeveer 3 km) uitgewerkt en geleid door Geert Roggeman die langs bezienswaardigheden i.v.m. Gilliot leidt, o.a. de ontwijde kerk in de Saunierlei.
Doorlopend: Tentoonstelling van een selectie foto’s die recent zijn bekomen. Hopelijk kunnen bezoekers ons vertellen of zij mensen herkennen.

Belgische art decokeramiek wordt vandaag vooral geassocieerd met het werk van Charles Catteau (1880-1966) voor Boch Frères Keramis in La Louvière. Zijn productie, en dat van zijn Atelier de Fantaisie, uit de periode 1920 tot 1940 geniet vandaag volkomen terecht een wereldwijde erkenning en haalt hoge prijzen. In een grote overzichtstentoonstelling die achtereenvolgens loopt in het Museum Torhouts Aardewerk (van 28 mei tot en met 4 september 2011) en het Musée de la Céramique d’Andenne (van 17 september 2011 tot 8 januari 2012) en in de begeleidende kunstmonografie, samen gesteld door een aantal vooraanstaande specialisten, worden alle belangrijke Vlaamse, Waalse en Brusselse producenten voor het eerst ruim gepresenteerd. Daarbij komen alle deeltechnieken en toepassingsvormen van keramiek aan bod: van aardewerk over faience en majolica tot steengoed en porselein, van gebruiksgoed over bouwaardewerk en tegels tot luxe kunstvoorwerpen en unica. *15/04 11de Internationaal Salon van de Oude Keramiek en Verzamelobjecten, Club van Lotharingen, voormalig Hotel de Merode, Poelaertplein 6, Brussel, 29 april - 02 mei 2011. *07/04 Research report LEMPKE, Ivonne - Fabric Analyse van Majolicategels uit het kasteel van Breda - vergelijkend onderzoek met majolicategels uit Antwerpen en Bergen-op-Zoom, mei 2008, pp.65.

In het onderzoek werden door middel van macroscopische techniek tegels afkomstig uit het Kasteel van Breda vergeleken met tegels afkomstig van 8 verschillende vindplaatsen in Antwerpen en tegels afkomstig van 2 verschillende vindplaatsen in Bergen-op-Zoom. Als testmateriaal werden nog tegels met een onduidelijke context - maar waarschijnlijk afkomstig uit Antwerpen - en tegels afkomstig uit Monnickendam (Nederland) in het onderzoek meegenomen.

*10/07 TACS database online - On Saturday 2nd July 2011, at their 30th Anniversary AGM, the TACS committee has launched a new online TACS database of tiled locations in the UK. This TACS database contains some 6000 entries, or just over twice the number of locations that are to be found in the Tile Gazetteer (published by TACS in 2005). In putting this database online TACS is making freely available site specific information to a wider audience, from the interested member of the public through to researchers, conservation officers and all those with specialist interest in particular sites within the UK.

During the mid 19th century Britain was not only the world’s leading imperial power, but was also its foremost exporter of architectural ceramics. The expansion of British territories led to the construction of many public and ecclesiastical buildings displaying the best of British design in ceramic terms.
The conference draws its inspiration from this export of British design and culture, and seeks to explore its consequences for the manufacturing industries of Stoke and beyond, for Britain, and for the former Empire.
The conference will be of interest to ceramic and cultural historians, archivists and curators, and to anyone with an interest in the histories of Stoke-on-Trent, the British tile industry, British manufacturing industry in general, and the British Empire.

*20/09 Collection - Carrelage médiéval à l'église d'Orgelet, Jura.
Ce carrelage a été découvert en 1975 lors des fouilles du château.
Il constituait sans doute le sol de la salle d'audience du château des seigneurs d'Orgelet. C'est le plus magnifique témoin de la forteresse qui dominait Orgelet et un inestimable ouvrage d'art.
Il est daté de la fin du XIII° siècle.
Il comprend environ 3000 carreaux et couvre à peu prêt 50 m². Le carrelage primitif a subi deux réparations, en bas à droite et en haut à gauche.

À la fin du XIVe siècle, des céramistes d'Espagne vont exporter leur savoir-faire en France à la demande du duc Jean de Berry (1340 - 1416). Des matériaux nouveaux et des techniques avancées sont ainsi mis en œuvre dans un contexte d'échange entre régions européennes (Valence, Gérone et Berry, Bourgogne). Une particularité des céramiques glaçurées produites est de présenter un décor de couleur bleue, ce qui est innovant pour l'époque en France. On entreprend dans cette étude de compléter les observations des archéologues en déterminant les caractéristiques physiques des matériaux (colorants, texture et constituants de la glaçure et de la terre cuite) et en recherchant des indices sur les techniques de fabrication.

  Im Kölner Dom sind mehr als 1.300 Quadratmeter Fußbodenmosaik des 19. Jahrhunderts bis heute noch fast unbekannt geblieben. Das liegt wohl auch daran, daß große Teilbereiche durch Teppiche und vor allem durch das Podest des Vierungsaltars abgedeckt sind. So bleibt der Chorumgang als der den Besuchern sicht- und begehbare Teil der Fußboden-Mosaiken.

De invloed van Ovidius' Metamorphosen reikt verder dan de literatuur. Zijn verhalen over wonderbare gedaanteveranderingen zijn tevens deel gaan uitmaken van de materiële cultuur. De Metamorphosen is niet alleen een inspiratiebron voor beeldend kunstenaars geweest; scènes uit het werk zijn ook terug te vinden in allerlei vormen van toegepaste kunst. Er was echter nog geen onderzoek gedaan naar de verbeelding van de Metamorphosen in de decoratie van de Nederlandse wandtegel. Dit prachtig geïllustreerde boek maakt dat ruimschoots goed. In het eerste hoofdstuk presenteert Reinhard Stupperich van het Archeologisch Instituut van de Universiteit van Heidelberg, de context van de Metamorphosen en de invloed van het werk in de Westerse cultuur. In daaropvolgende hoofdstukken beschrijven Jan Pluis en Reinhard Stupperich de afzonderlijke voorstellingen en wordt de lezer geholpen deze te herkennen en te duiden. Behalve Ovidius' verhalen komen ook andere mythologische thema's aan bod, zoals cupido's, zeewezens en arcadische taferelen. De auteurs hebben ernaar gestreefd bij iedere voorstelling ook de grafische bronnen af te beelden of te vermelden. Een bijzonder en smaakvol vormgegeven boek over de doorwerking van de klassieke oudheid in de Nederlandse toegepaste kunst.

*17/08 Tile panel being restored - Een tegeltableau boven de poort van het Birgitinessenklooster in Uden / Museum voor religieuze kunst is in restauratie. Het tableau dateert uit ca. 1900 en is een productie van Van Hulst in Harlingen. Er is nu een replica geplaatst, het origineel komt na restauratie binnen te hangen in het Museum voor religieuze kunst.

In the course of the nine days they will meet with several Friends of the Museu Nacional do Azulejo in Lisbon and other celebrated Portuguese tile experts, twelve of whom will join them for a festive dinner in Caldas da Rainha.

Bij de verschijning van de publicatie Haardstenen en de haard. Maaslandse haardstenen, productie, verspreiding, toepassing en versiering wordt een presentatie van circa zeventig haardstenen ingericht in het Limburgs Museum. In Rotterdam zijn er van het begin van de zeventiende eeuw tot aan 1866 vele miljoenen tegels gebakken. Deze gigantische productie varieert van de welbekende, 'Delftse', blauw beschilderde tegeltjes met bijvoorbeeld kinderspel, ambachten en Bijbelse voorstellingen tot aan zeer fraaie en bijzondere tegels en indrukwekkende tegeltableaus. Een flink deel ervan was bestemd voor export; Rotterdamse tegels zijn te zien in Franse kastelen, Duitse paleizen, Spaanse en Portugese kerken en zelfs in het Topkapi paleis in Istanbul.
Tegels uit Rotterdam is gebaseerd op de omvangrijke collectie tegels in het Historisch Museum Rotterdam. Twee conservatoren van het museum geven respectievelijk een breed overzicht van, en een gedetailleerd inzicht in de Rotterdamse tegelproductie. Daarbij komen aspecten als techniek, kosten, bedrijfsvoering en export aan de orde.
Daarnaast bevat het boek een apart katern met de beste stukken uit de collectie van het Historisch Museum Rotterdam en drie artikelen die op deelonderwerpen ingaan: de bijproducten uit de tegelbakkerijen, zoals borden, plaquettes en siervoorwerpen, de sprookjesachtige tegeldecoraties in de paleizen van de keurvorst van Keulen in Brühl, en het reilen en zeilen van de laatste tegelbakkerij in Rotterdam.
Dit geheel wordt gecompleteerd met een dvd met daarop het uit 1920 daterende basisboek De Rotterdamsche plateel- en tegelbakkers en hun product en al het beeldmateriaal van Rotterdamse tegelbakkerijen in de collectie van het Gemeentearchief Rotterdam.

*09/03 Azulejos da Estação do Pinhão - The railway station of Pinhão, which lies on the Douro some distance east of Régua, is decorated with 24 tile pictures, with a total of 3047 tiles, depicting rural scenes of the Douro region. They are in blue and white, with additional colours in the borders. The tiles were manufactured by the Fábrica Aleluia in Aveiro and painted by J. Oliveira in 1937. Only few trains are still operating on this line but the station has been drawing more visitors since 2008, when a Wine House and a shop with local produce were set up there. The railway company Refer together with the MNAz (National Tile Museum in Lisbon) will now restore the 24 panels. This is very good news, as too many abandoned railway stations have fallen into disrepair or been robbed of their tiles.

*14/04 Instituto de Promoción Cerámica - Communication: "The Instituto de Promoción Cerámica is a Spanish Institute belonging as an independent body to the Castellon County Council (Valencia, Spain). Located in the most important industrial ceramic region in Europe, the main objective of this institute is promoting the use of ceramics applied to architecture. To do so, the institute develops measures aimed at obtaining a better historical knowledge of ceramic applications in buildings. Besides, it promotes innovation and professional training in this area.
Created in 1982, our first aim was to support industrial ceramic tile manufacturing, for which we established a documentation centre that would provide the sector’s business and technical stakeholders with quality, topical information, as well as on developing a programme for the promotion of ceramic industrial design, of technical marketing as an instrument at the service of the marketing and sales, and of the installation quality of ceramic tilings. In order to make our services available to professionals and public interested in Ceramics applied to the habitat, our Institute has developed a website http://www.ipc.org.es where useful contents are available for consult. The different sections include a large Documentation Centre specialising in Ceramics applied to Architecture, which is constantly updated; a Covering Installation Guide, with information on everything regarding materials, techniques, substrates, defects, malfunctions, etc involved in tile installation. Besides, and as a demonstration of our will to provide a wide range of information dealing with the world of ceramics, there are other sections such as History of Architectural Ceramics and Ceramics within your Reach that will be activated in the near future. As you will note when consulting the contents in our website, many of them have been already translated into English, and at present we are working on the translation of the other sections.
Another aspect of our work deals with the publication of different books regarding both Covering Installation and Architectural Ceramics. Dans la perspective de l’ouverture en 2015 de Keramis - Centre de la Céramique de la Communauté française, le Musée royal de Mariemont présente une centaine de faïences Boch issues de plusieurs collections publiques et privées. Cette exposition est en quelque sorte une préfiguration de ce qui sera valorisé en permanence dès 2015 dans cette institution dédiée à l’histoire de l’entreprise et à la céramique contemporaine en Communauté française.
"Parmi les trésors de cette exposition, le public avisé retrouvera Le Feu, une grande composition murale qui se trouvait dans les bâtiments administratifs de l'entreprise et détruits en 1999. Acquise en 2006 et récemment restaurée, cette œuvre est significative d'une partie assez rnéconnue de l'œuvre de Raymond-Henri Chevallier, responsable artistique de l'entreprise jusqu' en 1954, A côté de cette œuvre fascinante, nous exposerons un fragment d'une autre composition murale du même auteur et titrée L'Alimentation. Celle-ci se trouvait au rayon du même nom d'un grand magasin de Verviers. Cette œuvre de vingt mètres carrés a été acquise par la Province de Hainaut désireuse de sauvegarder le patrimoine artistique d'une des plus importantes industries d'art hainuyères."

Vanaf 1840 werd de gedecoreerde vloer- en wandtegel een veelgevraagd, aantrekkelijk Belgische product dat op zeer ruime schaal werd toegepast. Vooral in de Art Nouveau architectuur, maar ook later in de Art Deco en in het Modernisme werden de vele toepassingsmogelijkheden van dit materiaal ten volle benut. Vandaag groeit de belangstelling voor het tegelpatrimonium, maar hoewel heel wat tegelrealisaties in uitstekende staat zijn, blijkt een deel ervan nodig aan restauratie toe.
In zijn rijk geïllustreerde lezing brengt auteur Mario Baeck dit prachtige materiaal tot leven. Daarnaast wordt uitvoerig ingegaan op onderhoudsaspecten en restauratiemogelijkheden met aandacht voor diverse schadebeelden en voor restauratie- en conservatiekansen.

*05/10 Tile panel saved - Het keramiekpaneel van de vroegere Gilliot-tegelfabriek dat op de hoek van de Sint-Bernardsesteenweg met de Bosstraat in Hemiksem hangt en dreigde te verdwijnen, kan dan toch blijven hangen. De toekomstige eigenaar wilde het paneel, dat vroeger gebruikt werd als wegwijzer naar de fabriek, namelijk verwijderen. Maar intussen stond het paneel al op een lijst als te beschermen erfgoed en probeerde schepen van Cultuur Joris Wachters de toekomstige eigenaars alsnog te overtuigen het paneel te behouden. Dat is uiteindelijk gelukt. Daarmee wordt zowat de enige herinnering behouden die verwijst naar de plaats waar de fabriek stond. Gilliot was in de vorige eeuw een vermaarde keramiekfabriek die tegels tot in Latijns-Amerika en Azië exporteerde.

During the mid 19th century Britain was not only the world’s leading imperial power, but was also its foremost exporter of architectural ceramics. The expansion of British territories led to the construction of many public and ecclesiastical buildings displaying the best of British design in ceramic terms.
The conference draws its inspiration from this export of British design and culture, and seeks to explore its consequences for the manufacturing industries of Stoke and beyond, for Britain, and for the former Empire.
The conference will be of interest to ceramic and cultural historians, archivists and curators, and to anyone with an interest in the histories of Stoke-on-Trent, the British tile industry, British manufacturing industry in general, and the British Empire.

Le site http://pagesperso-orange.fr/arts.medit.occ donne une idée succincte de l’immense travail réalisé sur la faïence de revêtement de la Régence turque d’Alger.

En l’absence d’études en la matière, l’auteur a entrepris depuis 1965 des recherches méthodiques sur cette céramique. Menées dans les différents pays fournisseurs réels ou potentiels de la Régence d’Alger, elles lui ont permis de découvrir très vite les erreurs répétées depuis près d’un siècle et toujours en cours, sur la provenance des faïences importées d’Espagne (les plus abondantes en quantités de carreaux) et de retrouver les origines de très nombreux modèles, séries et ensembles que parallèlement il a minutieusement relevés en Algérie.
Dans cet ouvrage, de nombreuses et importantes découvertes apparaissent; certaines d’entre elles ont déjà été publiées dans des revues spécialisées d’Espagne et des Pays-Bas. Au passage, les spécialistes étrangers y ont pu découvrir en outre l’abondance des productions de leur pays dans l’ancienne Régence, celle-ci renfermant même des créations, certaines signées, inconnues en leur pays d’origine.

In einer Kamineinfassung in Firle (in der Nähe von Lewes, East Sussex, Engeland) finden sich heute dreizehn bemalte Fliesen, offenbar der Rest eines oder mehrerer großformatiger Fliesenbilder; sie werden um neun weitere ergänzt, die im Haus gelagert sind. Diese 22 Fliesen, von denen eine mit 1546 datiert ist, sind Überreste eines überaus ehrgeizigen Auftrags. Sie werden hier zum ersten Mal beschrieben. Es gibt zahlreiche Gründe für die Annahme, daß die Fliesen im Workshop Den Salm in Antwerpen produziert werden und daß sie um etwa 1546 in das Haus eingebaut wurden.
Set into a fireplace at Firle (near Lewes, East Sussex, England) are thirteen painted tiles, evidently the remains of one or more large scale tile pictures; they are supplemented by nine more kept in store in the house. These twenty two tiles, one of which is dated 1546, are survivals from an ambitious commission; they are described here for the first time. There is every reason to suppose that the tiles were produced in the workshop Den Salm in Antwerp, and that they were installed in the house in or around 1546.

Die faszinierende Formenvielfalt reicht von rein geometrisch-abstrakten Mustern über farbenprächtige naturalistische Blumen- und Landschaftsdarstellungen bis hin zu volkstümlichen Figurenabbildungen. Zudem bietet das Buch ausführliche Informationen zur Fliesengeschichte, zu Herstellungsarten und Firmen sowie zur Epoche des Jugendstils.   In der spanischen Stadt Cádiz findet man in einem Hausflur über einem Wandsockel aus spanischen Fliesen niederländische Hirtenfliesen aus dem dritten Viertel des 17. Jahrhunderts in Zweitverwendung. Wo diese Fliesen zuerst angesetzt waren, konnte ich bis jetzt nicht herausfinden. Auch der Herstellungsort der Fliesen ist bis jetzt nicht geklärt.

  Der Fronteira-Palast, mit seinen großartigen Gärten, ist eine der sehenswertesten Residenzen portugiesischer Adliger des 17. Jahrhunderts. Er ist noch im Besitz der Gründerfamilie und wird von D. Fernando José Fernandez Costa Mascarenhas, elfter Marquis von Fronteira, bewohnt.
  Vor allem wegen seiner großzügigen Fliesenbekleidungen ist der Fronteira-Palast berühmt. Man kann diese in drei Gruppen unterteilen: die portugiesisch polychrome, die niederländisch blau-weiße und die portugiesisch blau-weiße.

In de hof van het Franciscaanse klooster Santo Antonio in Recife bevinden zich zo’n duizend blauw met witte zeventiende-eeuwse tegeltjes. Meanders en ossenkoppen, kinderspelen, schepen en zeemonsters. Hollandser kan het niet. Toen deze tegels in 1956 onder een kalklaag tevoorschijn kwamen was de opwinding in Recife groot. En al in 1959 verscheen hierover een publicatie door Joăo Miquel dos Santos Simŏes en José Antŏnio Gonsalves de Mello. Toeristen kwamen de Hollandse tegeltjes bewonderen en ondertussen eisten wind en zout hun tol.

Oorspronkelijk verzamelde Sytse Vijver (1936) zeventiende- en achttiende-eeuwse Friese wandtegels, totdat hij op een dag een tegel van rond 1900 kocht met een zwierige tulp erop. Geïntrigeerd door "de kleuren en het waas van geheimzinnigheid" begon hij zijn speurtocht in de wereld van de jugendstil en de art nouveau, waarover toen nog weinig bekend was. Nu, tientallen jaren later, bezit hij zo'n 900 voornamelijk buitenlandse tegels uit de periode 1880-1940 en is hij een kenner bij uitstek. Bij elke aanwinst probeert hij de productiegegevens te achterhalen: bij welke fabriek zijn de tegels gemaakt, wie is de ontwerper, waar zijn ze toegepast? Maar bovenal geniet Sytse Vijver van de schoonheid en zeggingskracht die zo'n tegelpatroon van slechts 15 bij 15 cm weet te bereiken.

*16/10 Tile theft - On Saturday, October 9, 2010 a break-in occurred at one of our Dutch tile friends. More than a hundred polychrome early 17th-century tiles are stolen. The police investigation is underway. There are traces found. It is not excluded that the perpetrators are aware of special and precious tile collections. The thieves knew where the tiles were located and what pieces they had to take away.

In the September 2010 newsletter there are articles on the former Colonial Theatre in Hagerstown, MD and on a similar Virebent coloured panel made in 1874 that is to be seen above the main entrance to Notre Dame de la Delbade in Toulouse.

Petite-fille de Georges Martel et fille de Jacques Martel, Rita Martel-Euzet, se consacre depuis la fermeture de la faïencerie en 2003 à son histoire. En 2005, elle ouvre un site Internet « La Galerie Géo Martel » http://geo-martel-desvres.pagesperso-orange.fr/ En 2007, elle franchit une nouvelle étape en publiant son premier ouvrage, sur un décor Art Déco «Jouy, un décor dans son temps ». En 2009, elle récidive avec « Des Boulongne à Géo Martel, deux siècles de carreaux à Desvres » (voir Bulletin nr. 29). En 2010, elle retrace la vie mouvementée d'Eugène Blot, statuaire de marines. Elle poursuit avec ce nouveau livre sur la sculpture en faïence et la biographie des artistes sculpteurs, connus ou oubliés, qui ont travaillé avec Georges et Jacques Martel.
