Escher tiles at home. Until the 20th of March 2024

Frm optical illusions and unconscionable architecture to life-like nature: the art of Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972) has it all. Escher was not only a graphic artist, he also designed for the public space. He made designs for tiled columns for two schools. Those tiles are now on display.

The Belgian tile production between the two world wars is covered. Change of taste and affordability, after the end of the First World war, caused a change in the tile supply. The succesful manufacturers held their position and were international a succes.

Over 300 tiles and panels cover this era with influences from the Orient and the Far East.

Sarreguemines - Moulin de la Blies - Musée des techniques faïencières et Jardin des Faïenciers

The museum showing the technical side of the local fayence industry. Between 1825 and 1969 was this one of the many factories of Sareguemines. In teh cellar is an explanation of the processing of the used clay.

Barnsley - Cannon Hall Museum, starting the 12th February 2024.

Country estate with house and gardens. This museum also accomodates until january 2025 the De Morgan museum dedicated to the artist couple William and Evelyn de Morgan. Both were painters and he was also a famous ceramist  who experimented with special glazing and produces many remarkable tiles. He was part of the Arts and Crafts established also by his friend William Morris. In the museum is now a large collectieon of thteir art on display. Otterlo- Nederlands Tegelmuseum

Friday the 23st of June the exposition Story Tiles was opened by Marga van Oers.

She made the last 10 years tiles inspired on classical Ducth tiles. Many friends attended this moment.

The exposition will last to the 31st of December 2023.

Otterlo – Nederlands Tegelmuseum

Exposition Bezielde Schoonheid, Tiles of the Art Nouveau in architecture,  1 april  – 1 february 2024.  Tiles and pictures of architecture and tiles in the Dutch Art Nouveau style, popular between 1895 and 1914. The inspiration for this exhibition came fro the book published in 2022 by Wim den Hertog and Jalf Flach with many pictures of buildings which still exist in the Netherlands. A selection of photographs of the book have been blown-up on the walls of the exhibtion room.

Exposition  Story Tiles, Dutch heritage with a twist to the present. 23 juni - 1 october 2023 

Certain tiles tell stories by their design, a tradition of four centuries. It all started with biblical and mythological themes. The tiles, made by Marga van Oers in Holland, have won last 10 years a great popularity worldwide.  We are happy that these tiles, inspired by the old ones, attracts a new public to the ceramic square which last for ages.

Apeldoorn - Paleis het Loo , after an extensive restauration the former Royal Palace opened it doors foor the public. One of the highlights for the tile-lover is the Royal cellar-kitchen of Queen Mary, dating from the end of the 17th century. This tiled kitchen started a fashion, to be seen in various castles abroad in the 18th century.

Schloss Schwetzingen, the large summer residence of the elector of the Palatinate, was built in the 18th century. In the garden, near the bath house is a small building inside decorated in 1723 with tiles from Rotterdam. This building is called the Porcelain house.

The Hamburg museum for applied arts has two exhibitions with a ceramic theme:

Made in China, until 28-8-2023, porcelain with 180 pieces from their own collection, period: from 1350 until now.

Work of the modern artist Young-Jae Lee can be seen to 23-4-2023.

For lovers of dutch tiles is the tiled Wilstermarsch-room, part of the permanent display, a must.

Jan Pluis, Vogels op Tegels en tegeltableaus, 1900 – 2000

Zo lang er in Nederland tegels zijn vervaardigd, behoren vogels tot het repertoire van de tegelschilder. Vogeltegels, met name die uit de zeventiende eeuw, vormen geliefde verzamelobjecten. In de achttiende eeuw werden maar weinig vogeltegels geproduceerd, maar met de negentiende-eeuwse belangstelling voor alles wat Oudhollands was, kwamen de zeventiende-eeuwse vogeldecors opnieuw in productie. In deze publicatie wordt vooral aandacht besteed aan vogeltegels uit de twintigste eeuw uit Makkum, Harlingen en Utrecht. Verslag van een opzienbarende opgraving in Alkmaar waar onder een oude bedstede een grote lading tegelafval van een voormalige tegelbakkerij in de Sint Annastraat die tot 1808 actief was. De vondsten dateren uit de tweede helft van de 18^e eeuw en de vroege zeventiende eeuw met fraaie gekleurde cirkeltegels. Die laatsten vormden een vloertje onder de bedstede.

Verbaasd over de weinige hoeveelheid informatie die te vinden is over de architect H.J. Dammermann Jr. ,die zijn eigen woonhuis ontwierp in 1904, startte Yann Martineau een speurwerk naar de door de architect nagelaten sporen in de straten van Den Haag, waaronder veel tegeltableaus.

Gefascineerd door de hoeveelheid gevonden elementen besluit hij de resultaten van zijn onderzoek in 2022 te publiceren ter gelegenheid van het honderdste sterfjaar van de architect.

Since 2021 there is a new temporary exhibition in the Gilliot & Roelants Tile Museum in Hemiksem Belgium, near Antwerp. This exhibition is entirely devoted to Art Nouveau.

From the impressive tile collection by Roberto Pozzo – with more than 9,000 tiles – which has been managed by the Gilliot & Roelants Tile Museum in Hemiksem since 2016, we have selected some 30 decorative panels and more than 300 tiles that are among the most beautiful examples of Belgian production; both from Gilliot & Cie’s plant as from competitors such as Boch Frères, Helman, the SA La Majolique, the Manufactures de Céramiques de Hasselt, the S.A. Boom, ’t Geleeg, Brickworks Museum of the Rupel region

This brickworks, over 9.88 acres, gives you a complete picture of an ordinary brickworks in all its aspects. The restored ring oven, klamp oven, rooftile shed, drying sheds are the result of hard work. The machine room with mixer, kollergangr, and press and a walk through the drying sheds are part of the guided tour. Here and nowhere else will you get to see the last complete brickworks in the Rupelstreek. The presence of a hand-molded plant, where they also produced floor tiles, as well as an industrial plant makes a visit to this site unforgettable.

The first mention of brickworks in the area dates back to 1346, with a  ‘tichelengeleghe’ at the Blauwe Pan (street name).
The first land register data dates back to 1721, found when creating the Caertboek of Boom. There were 2 brickworks on the location of the site Noeveren. Around 1840 there were even 3 brickworks. It stopped in the 1980's and is now an heritage site.

Aachen, Couven Museum. A barock house, named after the architect Jakob Couven, he has redecorated in 1786. The house dates from 1662 and was used since as a pharmacy. In 1958 it was converted to a museum showing interiors of the 18th century. One room is containing 6000 tiles of the collection of Peter and Irene Ludwig. The famous art collectors. The Museu Berardo Estremoz is a joint initiative by the Berardo Collection and Estremoz Municipal Council.
This museum presents what is considered the largest and most important private collection of tiles in Portugal. The Berardo Collection includes in situ tile sets, a heritage that includes the Bacalhôa Palace and Estate (Azeitão) and the Tocha Palace (Estremoz), and more than four thousand and five hundred movable examples dating from the 13th to the 21st century. The collection takes us on a journey through the secular history of tiles. On display in the historic Tocha Palace, which already contains some magnificent late-Baroque and Rococo tile
sets, the Museu Berardo Estremoz tells the story and history of the last eight centuries of tiling through its inaugural exhibition, "800 Years of Tile History".

Estremoz - Museu Berardo Estremoz – 800 Years of Tile History

The Museu Berardo Estremoz is a joint initiative by the Berardo Collection and Estremoz Municipal Council.
This museum presents what is considered the largest and most important private collection of tiles in Portugal. The Berardo Collection includes in situ tile sets, a heritage that includes the Bacalhôa Palace and Estate (Azeitão) and the Tocha Palace (Estremoz), and more than four thousand and five hundred movable examples dating from the 13th to the 21st century. The collection takes us on a journey through the secular history of tiles. On display in the historic Tocha Palace, which already contains some magnificent late-Baroque and Rococo tile
sets, the Museu Berardo Estremoz tells the story and history of the last eight centuries of tiling through its inaugural exhibition, "800 Years of Tile History".

Jalf Flach en Wim den Hartog, Bezielde Schoonheid, Art Nouveau bouwdecoratie in Nederland.

Een fraai boek van Wim den Hartog, keramist te Ede en Jalf Flach, kenner van de Art Nouveau. Antoon Ott. Verzameldrift, Biografie van Nanne Ottema (1874-1955)

Nanne Ottema (1874-1955) was als bestuurder, conservator, notaris, publicist en spreker actief in het Friese culturele leven. Hij stelde een beroemde keramiekcollectie samen die resulteerde in het Keramiekmuseum Princessehof in Leeuwarden. Zijn collectie, met meer dan 5000 tegels en het door hem vergaarde vermogen liet hij na aan de door hem en zijn vrouw Grietje Kingma in 1938 opgerichte Ottema-Kingma Stichting, die zijn levenswerk voortzette. In zijn tijd was hij een vermaard, berucht en dominant persoon. In deze biografie wordt het leven van Ottema uitvoerig beschreven met veel foto’s die het verhaal ondersteunen waaronder een aantal tegels. Het geeft een mooi inkijkje in het leven van een gedreven verzamelaar. Ook veel stof tot nadenken voor de hedendaagse verzamelaar.

Peter Sprangers, 250 jaar Rots-Oort aan de Vaartse Rijn, 1668 – 1918. Een boek gewijd aan de familie van Oort, bekende steen- en tegelbakkers in de regio Utrecht en de lotgevallen van hun huizen Rots-Oort/Rotsoord, Rotswijk en Rotsenburg. Jan Pluis, Vogels op Tegels en tegeltableaus, 1900 – 2000

Zo lang er in Nederland tegels zijn vervaardigd, behoren vogels tot het repertoire van de tegelschilder. Vogeltegels, met name die uit de zeventiende eeuw, vormen geliefde verzamelobjecten. In de achttiende eeuw werden maar weinig vogeltegels geproduceerd, maar met de
negentiende-eeuwse belangstelling voor alles wat Oudhollands was, kwamen de zeventiende-eeuwse vogeldecors opnieuw in productie.

     
In deze publicatie wordt vooral aandacht besteed aan vogeltegels uit de twintigste eeuw uit Makkum, Harlingen en Utrecht. De series konden worden gereconstrueerd dankzij bewaard gebleven sponsen. Aan de beschrijving van een aantal twintigste-eeuwse tegeltableaus met

Aachen, Couven Museum. A barock house, named after the architect Jakob Couven, he has redecorated in 1786. The house dates from 1662 and was used since as a pharmacy. In 1958 it was converted to a museum showing interiors of the 18th century. One room is containing 6000 tiles of the collection of Peter and Irene Ludwig. The famous art collectors. Most of the tiles are from Holland.

Bielefeld. Crüwell Haus, Obernstrasse 1a. A late mediaeval merchant house with an interesting gothic gable dating from 1530. Rebuilt afte the war and recently restored. It houses two shops. The part with the tobacco shop contains 7000 Delft tiles of teh collection of Richard Mitzlaff-Crüwell. They are partly to be seen from the street through the door in the Piggenstrasse. Unfortunately there are no copyright free pictures. If you are in the vicinity of Bielefeld you can try to make a photo. It would be nice to get one for the next ECTC bulletin.

Max Put. Art Nouveau in Amsterdam 1895-1910. Amsterdam is beroemd om zijn architectuur, maar Art Nouveau is er nauwelijks te vinden. Hiervoor moet je naar Den Haag of naar steden als Brussel en Parijs. Amsterdam was er te nuchter voor, zo luidt de gangbare mening. Hans Tulleners en Peter  Quatfass. Amsterdamse Stijlkamers, binnen de singelgracht. Dit boekje besteed uitgebreid  aandacht aan de bewaarde "stijlkamers" binnen de grachtengordel van Amsterdam. Ruim 40 huizen komen aan bod met de bouwgeschiedensi en een aantal foto's. De oudste dateren uit de vroege 17e eeuw en hebben nog een pronkschouw met tegels waarvan een aantal worden getoond. Helaas zijn bij de meeste kamers de tegels uit de 18e eeuwse schouw verdwenen. Een aardig detail is de gigantische Beiersche tegelkachel uit 1881 van Herengracht 380. Den Haag, Kunstmuseum,  Exhibition:Chinese Glass,Imperial Treasure.Chinese glass is rare all over the word, as China does not have a culture of glass like in Europe, where glass has been used to make drinking vessels since the Roman period. Modern methods of glass production were introduced to China by French Jesuits in the late seventeenth century, as part of an exchange of techniques and materials. But unlike in Europe at that time, the Chinese did not attempt to produce colourless, transparent glass. Zaandam, Zaans Museum.  This year, the museum recieved a large tile panel concerning the Bischoff company of fashion stores. The company was established in 1895 by Wilhelm Bischoff ( 1871-1941). For the silver jubilee in 1920 the staff of the company donated the panel depicting the various stores with the opening years.  Descendants of Wilhelm donated the panel which hung in the main office of the company in Zaandam. THE ADVENTURES OF 18th-CENTURY DUTCH TILES from the Hermitage Collection in the Kingdom of the Netherlands of the 21st Century, by Yuri Molodkovets (pictures), Ekaterina Andreeva and Roxana Rebrova (text). 120 pages.

A report of 3 Russians who visited Holland in 2019 to find parallels between the images on the tiles of the early 18th century and the modern life of the inhabitants of the Lower Countries. These tiles had been brought to Russia during the reign of Tsar Peter I, the Great. Some are still in situ and others have been removed and ended as debris. Some of these removed tiles haven been recovered in th 1970's and are now in the collection of the Hermitage Museum. In this book various tiles can bee seen with pictures of nowadays Holland. The idea was supported by the General Director of the State Hermitage Mikhail Borisovich Piotrovsky and the Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in St Petersburg.

When the book is available for the general public is not clear yet.

The book contains the texts, with colour illustrations, of some of the presentations given at a symposium in Figueira da Foz in 2014. The ‘authors’ are mainly Portuguese tile experts, but Johan Kamermans’ presentation is also printed here (in English) as well as a speech given by Francine Stoffels (in Portuguese) about the relations between Portugal and The Netherlands in the field of tiles, and particularly her own connection with the Portuguese tile world.

Johan Kamermans, Susana Varela Flor and Inês Maria Jordão Pinto write about Dutch tiles in Portugal. Maria Alexandra Trindade Gago da Câmara examines how Portuguese azulejos have been studied through the ages, as well as new methods of research. The presentations given by Diana Gonçalves dos Santos (our guide in Porto during the Dutch tile excursion in 2011), Alexandre Nobre Pais and Raúl Moura Mendes deal with the various types of tiles manufactured in Coimbra. With this publication new research into both Portuguese and Dutch tiles has been made available.

Susana Fonseca – Azulejos com História. (Portuguese, English, Spanish, French) objecto Anónimo, 2016, ISBN 978-989-8256-73-7. 145 pp. The first 90 pages of short texts and beautiful photographs guide you through the history of tiles in Portugal from 1500 to the present day. The next 55 pages contain mostly photographs arranged according to theme and location. Techniques of manufacture are explained, too. Indispensable for people who wish to make a tile tour of Portugal. In recent years a series of interesting and beautifully illustrated tile books have been published by Centro Atlântico (www.centroatlantico.pt). This was founded by photographer Libório Manuel Silva, who focuses on cultural subjects and heritage. He takes all the photos himself and Rosário Salema de Carvalho does all the editing of the tile books discussed below. Dat bleek meer dan gedacht. Het gaat ook om heel divers materiaal: van import vanuit Keulen en Nürenberg naar plaatselijke productie in zowel beige- als roodbakkend aardewerk, evenals in Antwerpse majolica.

Grâce à une documentation précise et une iconographie variée, l'auteur, historien de l'art, nous conduit de l'Ardèche, berceau de ce petit carreau en France, aux Antilles en passant par Barcelone et l'Afrique du nord. Malheureusement la littérature existante sur le développement international n’a pas été prise suffisamment en compte dans les chapitres qui retracent l'émergence et la diffusion de ce matériau de décoration démocratique qui connaît aujourd'hui un regain d'intérêt.

Seit 1870 werden in der "Mosaikfabrik" in Sinzig Fliesen hergestellt. Ein bedeutendes Kapitel dieser Industriegeschichte in Sinzig ist in einem Katalog festgehalten, der zur gleichnamigen Ausstellung (14.5.2011 bis 15.4.2012) im Sinziger Museum und in der Kantine der Deutsche Steinzeug AG erschien. Der Arbeitskreis Keramik des Sinziger Museums ermittelte unter Hinzuziehung zahlreicher Zeitzeugen aus der „Plattenfabrik“ eine Dokumentation zur Firmengeschichte, zum sozialen Zusammenleben im Betrieb, zur Herstellungstechnik der Sinziger Fliesen im Wandel der
Zeit und zu ihrer Verbreitung als Bodenfliesen in ganz Europa.
In Sinzig an encaustic floor tile factory was founded in 1870.
An interesting and well illustrated exhibition catalogue tells us more
about its history, its production and lists many interesting 19th and
early 20th century sites where tiles from this firm are still to be seen.

Tussen 1600 en 1900 ontstegen tientallen miljoenen tegels de stadsgrenzen van Utrecht. Met ruim 800 afbeeldingen toont dit boek u het aanzienlijke Utrechtse aandeel in de landelijke fabricage van wandtegels. U treft voorbeelden van de meest recente vondsten die via opgravingen lokaal aan het licht kwamen en zelfs Utrechtse tegels aan de wand in verre oorden. Een zeer opvallend aantal foto’s is gemaakt in situ.

Met dit boek kunnen tegelkenners de ontbrekende 300 Utrechtse jaren toevoegen aan hun eigen verzamelde documentatie. Waar voorheen slechts de toewijzing aan Utrecht werd gegeven, is het dankzij deze publicatie in de regel mogelijk om de verantwoordelijke bakkerij te benoemen, de periode waarbinnen is geproduceerd en soms zelfs de (meester-)schilder.

Dit jubileumboek geeft een beknopt en handzaam overzicht van de ontwikkeling van tegels en het gebruik ervan door de eeuwen heen in Nederland. Het geeft een prachtig geïllustreerd beeld hoe tegeltableaus werden toegepast in woningen en later ook in winkels. Nederland kende vele eeuwen een bloeiende tegelindustrie, waarvan de producten internationaal geliefd zijn. Vanaf 1885 tot 1940 had de industrialisatie grote gevolgen voor de tegelindustrie. Met de opkomst van de Art Nouveau kwam het plateelschilderwerk opnieuw op hoog niveau, waardoor een waardevol nieuw gebruik van tegels en tableaus ontstond. De diversiteit aan voorstellingen is indrukwekkend en vormt een spiegel van de Nederlandse kunstgeschiedenis.

The exhibition shows also a circa of 30 Art Déco ceramic pieces.

Reunida ao longo dos anos por Feliciano David e por Graciete Rodrigues, esta colecção, que agora é revelada em Aveiro, inclui mais de setenta painéis de azulejos, representativos das mais importantes fábricas nacionais, entre as quais se destacam a Fábrica de Loiça de Sacavém e a Fábrica de Cerâmica Lusitânia. * Article - Frans Caignie, Claire Dumortier, Matthias Paulke, Carreaux en majolique anversoise dans le château de Pierre-Ernest de Mansfeld à Luxembourg, in: Archaeologia Mosellana, 8/2012, pp. 225-273. Franse tekst – written in French.
De 2003 à 2007, le service archéologique du Musée National d’Histoire et d’Art a mis au jour lors des fouilles du château La Fontaine à Luxembourg-Clausen 430 fragments de carreaux en majolique. La confrontation de ces carreaux avec la déscription des différents locaux du château transcrits dans un inventaire de 1604, réalisé après le décès de Pierre-Ernest de Mansfeld, a permis de confirmer l’origine anversoise des majoliques. Celles-ci ont pu être produites dans l’atelier de Guido II Andries et d’Andries Eynhouts, et peut-être même dans celui de Lucas Andries dans le dernier tiers du XVIe siècle. L’analyse des décors a montré que Pierre-Ernest de Mansfeld commanda des séries de carreaux ornés de ses armoiries et de trophées de guerre, ainsi que des pavements agrémentés d’ornements Renaissance très variés dont le schéma décoratif dérive de modèles contemporains de Sebastiano Serlio et de Hans Vredeman de Vries. L’étude met en évidence dix types de carreaux anversois à décors aux ornements différents, nombre plus élevé que les fragments de même origine retrouvés sur les sites de la région anversoise. Elle contribue fortement à l’enrichissement du répertoire des décors ornementaux sur des carreaux anversois.
Bij opgravingen op de ruïnes van het voormalig kasteeldomein van Pierre-Ernest de Mansfeld in Luxemburg kwamen 430 tegelfragmenten in Antwerpse majolica tevoorschijn. Bij gedetailleerd onderzoek bleek dat deze behoren tot 10 verschillende decortypes. Na de dood van Mansfeld werd in 1604 een boedelbeschrijving opgesteld in het Frans die ten behoeve van de Spaanse koning Filips III naar het Spaans werd vertaald. Door confrontatie van de opgegraven tegelfragmenten met de beschrijving in de Spaanse inventaris zijn de auteurs erin geslaagd deze tegeldecors toe te wijzen aan verschillende kamers vermeld in de inventaris. Door de aanwezigheid van een zeer opvallend plat spijkergaatje in de tegelfragmenten is ook het productie-atelier in Antwerpen achterhaald kunnen worden.

The tiles discussed in this article, associated with a site to the southeast of İzmit, provide the critical link to the city of Nikomedia, a site named in medieval sources as a center of tile production but one that has untill now never yielded the excavated materials that could confirm the veracity of the written source. This article, which brings an extensive catalogue of tiles from the Nikomedia workshop, serves to clarify one of the mysteries surrounding the decoration of Middle Byzantine churches: the shortlived use of polychrome tiles as a decorative medium in Byzantium.

* Master Thesis - Josslyn Kay Stiner, Piecing It Together: The Introduction of Delftware Tiles to North America and Their Enduring Legacy in Charleston, South Carolina, a thesis presented to the Graduate Schools of Clemson University and the College of Charleston in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Master of Science Historic Preservation, May 2010, 217 p., ill.

The economic and social history of delftware tiles in North America and the use of delftware tiles south of Virginia was not well documented. This thesis presents an overview of delftware tile manufacture and use in Europe and America. Narrowing in scope, it compiles all of the published information on the subject in colonial America, focusing specifically on the use of delftware tiles in Charleston. It analyzes import patterns derived from newspaper advertisements printed during 1735 to 1820 and researches twenty-three eighteenth-century examples of delftware tiles in the city. The findings of this study establish a solid foundation for future research and preservation of delftware tiles both in Charleston and North America as a whole.
