This Bulletin is published with some delay due to the transfer of editorial responsibilities. Frans Caignie, who started the publication of this Bulletin in September 1995, has chosen some time ago to retire from his function after more than 16 years of dedication. Frans was responsible for no less than 33 editions and made the ECTC-Bulletin a very successful platform for exchanging information on all what happens in the wonderful world of tiles. On behalf of all the tile specialists and tile enthusiasts from all over the world, the new editor wants to thank Frans explicitly for his long time dedication.
All lay-out work for this Bulletin will from now on be done by Kelly Witteveen, newly appointed webmaster for the Nederlands Tegelmuseum Otterlo. The new editor also wants to thank her for the valuable assistance.

*Exhibition – „Niederländische Schmuckfliesen aus dem 17., 18. und 19. Jahrhundert – eine Dauerleihgabe der Sammlung Ludwig“ was opened on 08.06.2012 as a new part of the permanent exposition in the Erstes Deutsches Fliesenmuseum Boizenburg e.V., Reichenstr. 4, 19258 Boizenburg Boizenburg.
Seit Ende 2011 befindet sich ein Teil der Fliesen aus der Sammlung Ludwig aufgrund eines Dauerleihvertrages im Ersten Deutschen Fliesenmuseum in Boizenburg. Am 08.06.2012 wurde nun ein Teil der vielgestaltigen Sammlung niederländischer Fliesen- und Fliesenbilder präsentiert. Die Bildmotive zeigen Blumen, Figuren, Tiere, Landschaften sowie biblische Szenen.

Eind negentiende eeuw hebben enkele Hollandse schilders succes met geromantiseerde pittoreske stadsgezichten. Kleurig en zonovergoten. Bij de mode om op tegeltableaus en platen reproducties van schilderijen te maken, zijn naast de Oude Meesters en de Haagse School de stadsgezichten van Cornelis Springer (1817-1891) en Karel Klinkenberg (1852-1924) een duidelijk herkenbare groep. Het herenhuis van Helder bestaat niet meer, maar een deel van de inrichting bleef gespaard en werd in 1938 gebruikt om de nieuwe burgemeesterskamer in het stadhuis in te richten. Het prachtige tegeltableau van de hand van de Harlinger Pals Karsten, dat tot de top van de 18e-eeuwse Friese tegelbeschildering behoort, wordt door Ihno Dragt, directeur van het Dokkumer streekmuseum, hier uitgebreid beschreven.

*Newsletter – The March 2012 issue of the newsletter edited by the Friends of Terra Cotta Inc. contains an interesting well illustrated article on the 154 West 14th Street Building in New York and its architect Herman Lee Meader. The June 2012 issue pictures the acquisition by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York of a French ceramic fireplace rather enigmatically signed Muller/Lunéville (www.metmuseum.org/Collections/search-the-collections/120058332) as it is also known to be produced by Emille Muller of Ivry. This updated version of the illustrated ‘field guide’ to the key patterns found on the backs of mainly dust-pressed United States tiles from the 1870s through the 1930s is an invaluable source of information as also included are a bibliography and four appendices: Markings found on the backs of tiles; Patents relating to key patterns; Paper labels found on tile backs; and a timeline for U.S. tile manufacturers. The Field Guide was updated with additions and corrections through January 8, 2011.
