Inhuldiging Tegelpers - Op initiatief van het Samenwerkingsverband Rupelstreek werd een oude tegelpers deskundig gerestaureerd door de afdeling ‘Leren en Werken’ van de Provinciale Technische School van Boom. Op zondag 20 juni 2010 zal ter gelegenheid van de jaarlijkse Gilliotmarkt om 13.00 uur de gerestaureerde oude tegelpers plechtig onthuld en overgedragen worden aan het Gilliot en Roelants Tegelmuseum. 'Tin-glazed tiles from London looks at the rich diversity of decorative tile designs available in the capital over 400 years. It traces the use of multicoloured floor tiles from their initial import from Spain at the beginning of the 16th century, through the switch to Low Countries imports in the mid 16th century, to their manufacture in London during the late 16th century. A century later, tin-glazed tile manufacture changed profoundly - to the production of thinner, generally blue en purple on white tiles intended for walls. Many of these wall tiles were Dutch imports, relatively few being made in London before the 18th century. Over 500 individual designs are catalogued, many on tiles in the Museum of London.

Book BETTS, Ian & I WEINSTEIN, Rosemary - TIN-GLAZED TILES FROM LONDON, Museum of London Archaeological Service, Sept 2010, 213pp, nearly 600 colour illustrations, boards (with French, Dutch and German summaries).
Tin-glazed tiles have been used in London since the early years of the 16th century, initially imported from Spain, then the Netherlands and eventually made in London in the Capital itself. The styles vary from the earliest Spanish Arista or Cuenca tiles, through the polychrome Maiolica hand painted designs to the traditional blue and white delft tiles made both in London and in the Netherlands. Large numbers of these tiles have been found during the last 30 years or so and this book has been written to document them in considerable detail.

The book commences with an overview of the methods of tin-glazed tile manufacture and then considers the introduction and use of tin glazed floor tiles imported from Seville in the early 16th century and later imports from Belgium (Flanders) in the mid 16th century. By 1571 production had begun in London and this is covered in detail. By the 1630s tiles were also being used on walls, as a result of imports from the Netherlands and before long an indigenous production had commenced, although Dutch tiles continued to be imported in large numbers up to c1800.
The latter part of the book looks in more detail at buildings in the London area known to have tin-glazed floor and wall tiles, mainly Dutch, but with examples also from London and Liverpool. A catalogue of over 500 designs completes the book.

La collection regroupe des objets représentatifs de l'ensemble de la production desvroise. Il s'agit pour l'essentiel de pièces de forme, mais une place importante est laissée au carreau. Plusieurs centaines de modèles au format 11X11 ou 13X13 illustrent la diversité de la production desvroise.
Dès le XVIIIème siècle, les faïenciers Sta-Dupré produisent des carreaux à motifs révolutionnaires ou à la corbeille fleurie. Le XIXème et le début du XXème seront les siècles Fourmaintraux, que ce soit sous les marques Fourmaintraux-Hornoy, Fourmaintraux-Courquin ou Fourmaintraux-Delassus. Tous contribueront à la diffusion de ce savoir-faire.

The clay is stamped by hand and decorations are hand painted with natural oxides. The article is about two shop interiors with tile pictures in the Amsterdam Spuistraat. In one shop the tile pictures, from 1898, are still in situ and cover the upper half of two walls; in the other shop the tile pictures, from 1925-1930, were removed from the tiled walls, which tiled surfaces were destroyed or covered. Four of the original five pictures, showing views of Amsterdam in the nineteenth century, are placed back on different walls in the shop. With six colour illustrations of the shop interiors, the tile pictures and the drawings and photographs they are based on.

Article - KAMERMANS Johan "Het tegeltableau voor gemeentesecretaris Van Nes", in: De Zandloper, Uitgave van de Vereniging Oud Ede 38 (2010 nr. 1), pp. 21-30. Het artikel behandelt een tegeltableau van de Haagse plateelbakkerij Rozenburg, dat in 1905 als jubileumgeschenk werd gemaakt. In hetzelfde nummer ook een artikel door Frans van Oort over de in 1905 jubilerende gemeentesecretaris Van Nes.

Museum catalogue - El catalog en la web del Museo Nacional de Cerámica y Artes Suntuarias González Martí, C/ Poeta Querol 2, 46002 VALENCIA.
Este mes de marzo ha aparecido publicado, en la Web del museo, el catálogo digital de las colecciones del museo, el cual se puede consultar desde la página de inicio a través del apartado “la colección” que da paso a “acceso al catálogo”. Este catálogo permite el acceso a 323 fondos del museo y a 406 imágenes digitales de los mismos, que conforman una muestra representativa de los 26209 fondos inventariados del museo y que se irán incorporando al catálogo progresivamente.

Festival - Tile Heritage is presenting "Clay Expectations: A Festival of Tiles and Mosaics" on Sunday, September 12, 2010 at the Howden Building at 17th and Webster Sts. in Oakland, California. Open from 10-5 the show will have free street parking throughout the day.
Robert Howden, Sr., an ambitious tile man, as well as a poet, writer, and artist of many talents, erected this structure as a monument to his illustrious career. Designed to sell tiles when completed in 1925, the building is covered inside and out with historic tiles of every description, preserved over the years, and now a legacy for Howden's remarkable achievements.
"Clay Expectations," a one-day, fund-raising event for Tile Heritage, will feature contemporary artists and artisans showing their ware side by side with historic tile dealers - all tiles and mosaics will be offered for sale. Lectures, tours and workshops especially for kids will also be in the offing, so you'll want to bring your whole family. Gate: $5.
