Naar aanleiding van een mooie en interessante kacheltegel gevonden op de site Jeugdherberg in Antwerpen werd nagegaan wat er in de loop van ca. 40 jaar archeologisch onderzoek aan kacheltegelfragmenten verzameld werd in het depot van de dienst archeologie. Dat bleek meer dan gedacht. Het gaat ook om heel divers materiaal: van import vanuit Keulen en Nürenberg naar plaatselijke productie in zowel beige- als roodbakkend aardewerk, evenals in Antwerpse majolica.
This article brings an overview on 40 years of archeological finds of stove tiles and tile fragments in the city of Antwerp with local material next to import from Köln and Nürenberg.

In Sinzig an encaustic floor tile factory was founded in 1870.
An interesting and well illustrated exhibition catalogue tells us more
about its history, its production and lists many interesting 19th and
early 20th century sites where tiles from this firm are still to be seen.

Een bijzondere expositie met werk van beeldend kunstenaar Joke Plomp uit Hasselt. In het museum is naast een unieke verzameling van streekdrachten en erfgoed uit Staphorst en omgeving ook een collectie antieke tegels te zien die een beeld geven van het dagelijkse leven in die tijd. Tussen 1600 en 1900 ontstegen tientallen miljoenen tegels de stadsgrenzen van Utrecht. Met ruim 800 afbeeldingen toont dit boek u het aanzienlijke Utrechtse aandeel in de landelijke fabricage van wandtegels. U treft voorbeelden van de meest recente vondsten die via opgravingen lokaal aan het licht kwamen en zelfs Utrechtse tegels aan de wand in verre oorden. Een zeer opvallend aantal foto’s is gemaakt in situ.
Met dit boek kunnen tegelkenners de ontbrekende 300 Utrechtse jaren toevoegen aan hun eigen verzamelde documentatie. Waar voorheen slechts de toewijzing aan Utrecht werd gegeven, is het dankzij deze publicatie in de regel mogelijk om de verantwoordelijke bakkerij te benoemen, de periode waarbinnen is geproduceerd en soms zelfs de (meester-)schilder.

Dit jubileumboek geeft een beknopt en handzaam overzicht van de ontwikkeling van tegels en het gebruik ervan door de eeuwen heen in Nederland. Het geeft een prachtig geïllustreerd beeld hoe tegeltableaus werden toegepast in woningen en later ook in winkels. Nederland kende vele eeuwen een bloeiende tegelindustrie, waarvan de producten internationaal geliefd zijn. Vanaf 1885 tot 1940 had de industrialisatie grote gevolgen voor de tegelindustrie. Met de opkomst van de Art Nouveau kwam het plateelschilderwerk opnieuw op hoog niveau, waardoor een waardevol nieuw gebruik van tegels en tableaus ontstond. De diversiteit aan voorstellingen is indrukwekkend en vormt een spiegel van de Nederlandse kunstgeschiedenis.

The exhibition shows also a circa of 30 Art Déco ceramic pieces.
Reunida ao longo dos anos por Feliciano David e por Graciete Rodrigues, esta colecção, que agora é revelada em Aveiro, inclui mais de setenta painéis de azulejos, representativos das mais importantes fábricas nacionais, entre as quais se destacam a Fábrica de Loiça de Sacavém e a Fábrica de Cerâmica Lusitânia. The architecture of the Piano INA Casa projects dating from 1949-1963 is embellished with attractive ceramic plaques to individualize the different buildings. They are designed by artists such as Burri, Morbiducci, De Laurentiis, Kowaliska. The presentation brings a visual catalogue of these plaques.

* Article - Frans Caignie, Claire Dumortier, Matthias Paulke, Carreaux en majolique anversoise dans le château de Pierre-Ernest de Mansfeld à Luxembourg, in: Archaeologia Mosellana, 8/2012, pp. 225-273. Franse tekst – written in French.
De 2003 à 2007, le service archéologique du Musée National d’Histoire et d’Art a mis au jour lors des fouilles du château La Fontaine à Luxembourg-Clausen 430 fragments de carreaux en majolique. La confrontation de ces carreaux avec la déscription des différents locaux du château transcrits dans un inventaire de 1604, réalisé après le décès de Pierre-Ernest de Mansfeld, a permis de confirmer l’origine anversoise des majoliques. Celles-ci ont pu être produites dans l’atelier de Guido II Andries et d’Andries Eynhouts, et peut-être même dans celui de Lucas Andries dans le dernier tiers du XVIe siècle. L’analyse des décors a montré que Pierre-Ernest de Mansfeld commanda des séries de carreaux ornés de ses armoiries et de trophées de guerre, ainsi que des pavements agrémentés d’ornements Renaissance très variés dont le schéma décoratif dérive de modèles contemporains de Sebastiano Serlio et de Hans Vredeman de Vries. L’étude met en évidence dix types de carreaux anversois à décors aux ornements différents, nombre plus élevé que les fragments de même origine retrouvés sur les sites de la région anversoise. Elle contribue fortement à l’enrichissement du répertoire des décors ornementaux sur des carreaux anversois.
Bij opgravingen op de ruïnes van het voormalig kasteeldomein van Pierre-Ernest de Mansfeld in Luxemburg kwamen 430 tegelfragmenten in Antwerpse majolica tevoorschijn. Bij gedetailleerd onderzoek bleek dat deze behoren tot 10 verschillende decortypes. Na de dood van Mansfeld werd in 1604 een boedelbeschrijving opgesteld in het Frans die ten behoeve van de Spaanse koning Filips III naar het Spaans werd vertaald. Door confrontatie van de opgegraven tegelfragmenten met de beschrijving in de Spaanse inventaris zijn de auteurs erin geslaagd deze tegeldecors toe te wijzen aan verschillende kamers vermeld in de inventaris. Door de aanwezigheid van een zeer opvallend plat spijkergaatje in de tegelfragmenten is ook het productie-atelier in Antwerpen achterhaald kunnen worden.

* Article - Sharon E . J . Gerstel, with technical analysis by Julie Lauffenburger, ‘The Nikomedia Workshop: New Evidence on Byzantine Tiles’, in: The Journal of the Walters Art Museum 66/67 (issue year 2008/2009, published 2010).
The tiles discussed in this article, associated with a site to the southeast of İzmit, provide the critical link to the city of Nikomedia, a site named in medieval sources as a center of tile production but one that has untill now never yielded the excavated materials that could confirm the veracity of the written source. This article, which brings an extensive catalogue of tiles from the Nikomedia workshop, serves to clarify one of the mysteries surrounding the decoration of Middle Byzantine churches: the shortlived use of polychrome tiles as a decorative medium in Byzantium.

* Master Thesis - Josslyn Kay Stiner, Piecing It Together: The Introduction of Delftware Tiles to North America and Their Enduring Legacy in Charleston, South Carolina, a thesis presented to the Graduate Schools of Clemson University and the College of Charleston in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Master of Science Historic Preservation, May 2010, 217 p., ill.
The economic and social history of delftware tiles in North America and the use of delftware tiles south of Virginia was not well documented. This thesis presents an overview of delftware tile manufacture and use in Europe and America. Narrowing in scope, it compiles all of the published information on the subject in colonial America, focusing specifically on the use of delftware tiles in Charleston. It analyzes import patterns derived from newspaper advertisements printed during 1735 to 1820 and researches twenty-three eighteenth-century examples of delftware tiles in the city. The findings of this study establish a solid foundation for future research and preservation of delftware tiles both in Charleston and North America as a whole.
