L'engouement pour ce type de décor fut tel qu'il fut utilisé pour les plates tombes, particulièrement en Normandie qui, avec l'Angleterre, était une terre de production des pavages. Les décors céramiques, important domaine du répertoire gothique, se sont bien entendu inspirés des styles déjà existants comme ceux des manuscrits.
